The Love of Money

Money doesn’t have to be a downfall.
Money/currency is a powerful thing. Many have died chasing it and many more lives are ruined because of misusing  it. According to the Apostle Paul concerning a believer, it doesn’t have to be that way. For the believer in Jesus, money ought to be used in a responsible way. True, money is a universal commodity and everyone has need of it, but not everyone’s needs need to be greed. Paul encourages Timothy to “Teach these things…” Contentment which is the opposite of greed. Some of the false teachers of their time were teaching that …godliness is a means of gain.” {1. Timothy 6:5b} meaning, serving the Lord through the preaching and teaching of His word. Paul says but godliness with contentment is great gain, {6:6} Contentment is the key word here for the 1st Century believer as well of the modern day believer. It isn’t wrong to have money or things per se but as long as they do not have you. Being content with what one has is godliness, whether its much or little. Being okay with who you are and whose you are and what you have are means of contentment. Remember, Paul actually practiced what he preached, you see this in Philippians 4:10-13 (ESV) 10  I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11  Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13  I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Being in Christ, scripture teaches that we as believers ought be chasing godliness not money or material things. There is nothing wrong with having money or things for that matter its when they have you.
