ARE CHRISTIANS EXPECTED TO BE THANKFUL?
I know the title may seem like a dumb question, "Are Christians expected to be thankful?" Well let's consider the word "expect", this has the connotation of something we MUST do or be, but shouldn't being thankful come from an attitude of gratitude? In other words shouldn't this thankfulness that we have come from the inside rather than forcing our thankfulness to show up on the outside?
I think Christians OUGHT to be thankful, if for nothing else just simply being a Christian is more than enough to shout from the highest mountain our gratitude for the Lord of glory saving us.
So yes, a thousand times yes, we as Christians are expected and ought to be thankful to our Heavenly Father. Scripture says,
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NASB)
16 Rejoice always;
17 pray without ceasing;
18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Many of the Psalms speak of being thankful;
Psalm 100:1-5 (NASB)
1 Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.
3 Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.
5 For the LORD is good; His loving-kindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.
Romans 1:21 (NASB)
21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
I also believe that if we are truly Christians we cannot help but to be thankful in everything. Doesn't necessarily mean to be thankful for everything but to be thankful in everything. Happy Thanksgiving!
